Collaborative Crafting: Beau Willimon Discusses Joyful Teamwork on Series Andor and Severance

In a fiery chat with Variety, scribe Beau Willimon, the brainchild behind Apple TV+'s Severance and a wordsmith for both seasons of Andor, drops some intriguing insights. He likens penning Star Wars scripts to being a rockstar on someone else's album!

His creative journey with Andor genius Tony Gilroy kicked off on the set of the Willimon-born Netflix series House of Cards, with Gilroy stepping in as a consulting producer. Willimon admits, "I grew up with and love Star Wars, but I'm no die-hard fan." Gilroy's response? "The less you know, the better because I want to tell a human, mature story."

Willimon and Gilroy teamed up for a six-week story-breaking extravaganza. "I was relieved of the usual burden a showrunner bears. All I had to do was write scripts for my buddy Tony Gilroy," Willimon said proudly. Regarding Andor's current season, he added, "I'm damn proud of Season 2!"

Willimon shared some behind-the-scenes tales of his involvement in Severance. Though not his usual gig, he accepted the executive producer role to lend a hand in season two's production. "It was mind-blowing to work on this one-of-a-kind show! I'm all about tackling projects I'm clueless about, and with Severance, it was this captivating universe and tone. I challenged myself to help bring Season 2 to life!"

This unique producer-for-hire experience, Willimon remarks, has fueled a fresh passion for producing. "Sometimes I have a detached perspective, which can be useful, or it just ties up loose ends. I'm not the mama bird; I just help others bring up the baby!"
