Thorsten Frei's Take: CDU-Left Coalition Out of the Question

Uncooperative: Collaboration with the Left politically unimaginable - Collaboration with the Left Politically Unfeasible without Costs Involved

Hey there! Let's chat about the recent to-do at the Ludwig-Erhard Summit in Gmund on the Tegernsee, where Thorsten Frei, our buddy and CDU's Chief of Staff, had a thing or two to say.

In a nutshell, Thorsten flat-out refuses to entertain the idea of a political alliance between the CDU and the Left Party. He mentioned the incompatibility resolution the CDU's had since 2018, explaining that any changes to that would have to come from a federal party conference, but as of now, no one's voiced interest in that.

Remember when he said after the Chancellor election that the Union might need to look into partnership possibilities with the Left? Well, he's come clean. He wouldn't dare suggest political cooperation — what he meant was the formal question regarding the possibility of achieving a two-thirds majority in the Bundestag with the new ratio of majorities. Without the fringes, like the AfD and Left, such a situation isn't feasible, as evident in the Chancellor election's rule change.

On the topic of coalitions, they require a minimum programmatic overlap. Thorsten insists there's no such overlap with the Left, thus ruling out any possibility of a coalition.

So, there you have it. CDU and the Left — not gonna happen, according to Thorsten Frei.

  • Thorsten Frei
  • CDU
  • The Left
  • Gmund
  • Tegernsee
  • Bundestag
  • Chancellor election
  1. Despite Thorsten Frei's initial suggestion post the Chancellor election, he has now clarified that he would not advocate for a political cooperation between the CDU and The Left.
  2. Thorsten Frei, the Chief of Staff for the CDU, firmly believes that there is no programmatic overlap with The Left, making a coalition between the two unlikely.
  3. The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, but any potential policy changes regarding coalition with The Left, according to Frei, are highly improbable.
  4. The incompatibility resolution that the CDU has held since 2018 is a significant factor in ruling out any political alliance with The Left, as Frei emphasized during the recent discussions at the Ludwig-Erhard Summit in Gmund on the Tegernsee.
