In a surprising turn of events, Stephan Brinktrine, a former mayoral candidate and member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has announced his support for Green Party candidate Tilman Fuchs in the upcoming runoff election in Münster, Germany.
The announcement was made at a press conference held in the morning in front of City Hall 2 on September 19, 2025. Brinktrine, who had previously been a contender for the mayoral position, expressed his main concern as affordable housing and his hope to achieve "building simpler, faster, and cheaper" with Fuchs, all while not neglecting climate protection.
Brinktrine and Fuchs agree that it's important for the next mayor of the city of Münster to think for all people. Both parties have agreed on overlaps in their election programs, focusing on the need for affordable housing, climate protection, and a sustainable future for Münster.
The mayoral election, initially scheduled for September 14, 2025, resulted in a runoff being necessary. On September 14, Tilman Fuchs received 41.30% of the votes, while LWL director Dr. Georg Lunemann (CDU) garnered 37.28%. The runoff election will take place on September 28, 2025.
