Collaboration Initiated with Ar-Ramtha on a Joint Venture
In a bid to support cities grappling with the refugee crisis and promote sustainable waste management practices, the city of Augsburg, Germany, has entered into a partnership with Ar-Ramtha, Jordan. This partnership, initiated in July 2020, aims to learn from Ar-Ramtha's broad experience in refugee integration while contributing Augsburg's expertise in water supply and disposal.
Ar-Ramtha, one of the cities in Jordan most affected by the refugee crisis, has seen its population nearly double since 2011. The influx of refugees has presented immense challenges, including providing accommodation, sustenance, and employment opportunities, while maintaining high-quality public services, particularly in waste management.
To address these challenges, a feasibility study on various recycling options in Ar-Ramtha was completed in autumn 2021. The study, commissioned by the upcoming project partners, recommended the establishment of a municipal waste management company based on the Augsburg model, the expansion of the existing sorting facility to a recycling center, and the introduction of a low-tech composting facility.
The virtual project planning workshop, hosted by the project partners, brought together representatives from AWS, AVA, and GIZ in Amman to specify project activities in the field of waste management. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was drafted and signed by the mayors of the upcoming project partner municipality during the workshop.
A key component of the partnership is the construction of a recycling center in Ar-Ramtha. This center will serve as a collection point for various waste fractions such as paper, cardboard, plastic, organic waste, electronic waste, and construction waste. The center will also house a pilot-scale composting facility for organic waste.
The expansion of recycling activities in Ar-Ramtha is aimed at strengthening its organizational and processing capacities. Federal funding will be applied for in spring 2022 to finance the implementation of the recommended measures from the feasibility study.
This partnership between Augsburg and Ar-Ramtha presents an opportunity for both cities to learn from each other's experiences and work towards more sustainable and inclusive urban development. While Augsburg can share its expertise in waste management and water supply, Ar-Ramtha can offer insights into refugee integration and resilience in the face of crises.
As of August 2025, there are no available search results providing information on the current status or future plans regarding the communal waste management partnership between Augsburg and Ar-Ramtha.
