Thorsten Frei Speaks Out: No Politics with the Left on the Table, Amidst Unease within CDU

Unattainable: Collaboration with The Left in Politics - Collaboration in Politics: Alignment with the Left Considered Impossible

No place for the Left in political talks, asserts Thorsten Frei, Chief of Staff to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, at the Ludwig-Erhard Summit in Gmund am Tegernsee. The CDU hasn't seen any attempt to change the incompatibility resolution of 2018, Frei clarified, and a federal party congress is the only means to do so.

"Clearly, I was unclear there," confessed Frei, referring to his past statement suggesting collaboration between the Union and the Left could be considered. He made it clear that he wasn't advocating for political cooperation but rather discussing potential ways to secure a two-thirds majority in the Bundestag, without involving extremist parties like the AfD or the Left.

In terms of political coalitions, minimum programmatic overlap is crucial. However, Frei emphasized that there's no overlap with the Left, making any coalition impossible.

This new stance by Thorsten Frei marks a shift from the CDU's conventional refusal to work with Die Linke, a change influenced by the difficulties faced by the CDU/SPD coalition in retaining a stable majority. The CDU's welcome to reevaluate their stance on cooperation stemmed from the Challenge of maintaining a majority in the face of the new Bundestag power ratios.
