"Frei Speaks Out: No Political Alliance with the Left"

Collaboration with the Left is Impracticable, Without a Doubt - Collaboration in Politics: A Pipe Dream with the Left

Right-off-the-bat, Thorsten Frei, CDU's chief staffer, boldly rejected any possibility of a political alliance between the CDU and the Left Party. This candid statement was made during the Ludwig-Erhard Summit in the picturesque town of Gmund, by the calm waters of Tegernsee.

"CDU's Incompatibility Resolution of 2018," Frei stressed, adding that he wasn't privy to any attempts to alter this resolution, which can only be done through a federal party conference. "As far as I know, no one in the CDU or CSU wants this," Frei asserted.

"Misunderstood Myself," Frei Confesses

Following the election of the Chancellor, Frei mentioned that the Union would "have to discuss" how collaboration with the Left could possibly shape up in the future. "However, we're now evaluating some questions that need revisiting," Frei clarified, adding, "But clearly, I should've expressed myself more precisely back then." He wasn't hinting at a political alliance but rather discussing the technical hurdles of achieving a two-thirds majority in the Bundestag considering the new majority ratios. Bypassing the fringe parties, such as the AfD and the Left, would no longer be feasible, as demonstrated by the recent change in the rules of procedure necessary for the Chancellor election.

"No Common Ground with the Left"

Political alliances, as Frei points out, necessitate a "minimum programmatic common ground." But, he made it clear that "there's no common ground with the Left," making an alliance impossible.
