Beau Willimon: The Guy Behind the Words in Star Wars' Andor and Apple TV+'s Severance

In a candid chat with Variety, writer Beau Willimon talks about two smashing series he's working on - he's an executive producer on Apple TV+'s Severance and has written episodes for both seasons of Andor, part of the iconic Star Wars universe.

He likened scriptwriting for Star Wars to being a session musician for someone's album. His creative journey with Andor creator Tony Gilroy kickstarted on the Willimon-created Netflix series House of Cards, with Gilroy joining as a consulting producer.

"I thought Tony was joking when he asked me to pen a few episodes for Andor," said Willimon. "I was thrilled, though, since I grew up with and love Star Wars, but I'm no expert." Gilroy reassured him, "Less knowledge is better because I want to spin a tale of humans and mature themes."

Willimon, along with Tony Gilroy and Tony's brother Dan, spent six weeks collaborating on the storyline for Andor. "It was a dream run. I didn't have the usual burdens of a showrunner. My only job was to churn out scripts for Tony Gilroy to like," he shared. He added, "I'm incredibly proud of the second season of this show."

Willimon has also lent a hand in fleshing out the universe of Severance for the Apple TV+ series' second season, serving as an executive producer to aid the team.

"I stepped in as a producer on the production side of Severance. It's a unique, quirky world, unlike anything I've worked on before. I jumped at the chance to challenge myself with this new project, helping bring the second season to fruition," he said.

According to Willimon, working on Andor and Severance has reignited his passion for producing. "I love the feeling of facilitating someone else's vision. I can offer a fresh perspective or practical help without having to shoulder the whole responsibility. It's like being a parent's helper, assisting in raising the child without having to worry about the baby being mine," he concluded.
