Collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan confirmed; decision on director remains forthcoming
In a highly anticipated move, two of Indian cinema's biggest stars, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, are set to reunite on screen after more than four-and-a-half decades. The announcement was made separately by both actors, with Rajinikanth confirming at the Chennai airport on September 17 and Kamal Haasan at a recent awards ceremony in Dubai.
Their first collaboration was in K Balachander's iconic film Apoorva Raagangal, which was also Rajinikanth's film debut. Since then, the duo has starred together in nearly 20 movies, including Thillu Mulllu, a remake of the Bollywood cult classic Golmaal, and Aval Appadithaan.
The production of this upcoming movie requires the right story, characters (supporting cast), and director. While there has been speculation suggesting that Lokesh Kanagaraj may direct the movie, it is yet to be confirmed. Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for directing movies such as Kaithi (2019), Maangaram (2017), the Kamal Haasan-starrer Vikram (2022), and Rajinikanth's Coolie, has not been officially announced as the director.
Neither Rajinikanth nor Kamal Haasan have confirmed Lokesh Kanagaraj as the director of their magnum opus. However, if the speculation proves true, it would mark a significant collaboration between the director and the two stars.
The movie will be produced by Raaj Kamal Films International (owned by Kamal Haasan) and Red Giant Movies (owned by actor-politician Udhayanidhi Stalin). Rajinikanth's latest movie Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has now been released on streaming platforms.
IV Sasi directed the last movie Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan appeared together in, Allaudinaum Arputha Vilakkum, 46 years ago. This upcoming movie will be the first time in 46 years that the two actors appear together.
