Coldplay potentially planning a comeback to South Africa?
British pop-rock band Coldplay, known as one of the most successful and influential music acts of the 21st century, is set to return to Southwest Africa in 2027. This announcement has sent waves of excitement among local fans who have been waiting for over a decade for the band's return.
Coldplay, formed in 1996 by Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion, has sold over 160 million records worldwide. The band's most recent tour, the Music of the Spheres world tour, has become one of the biggest in music history, performing to over 13 million fans across 211 shows.
Martin's recent mention of southern Africa has raised hopes among fans that Southwest Africa could be included in the tour. Although no venues or dates for the Southwest African shows have been confirmed yet, signs suggest a long-awaited Coldplay return to Southwest Africa may be on the horizon.
The Music of the Spheres world tour has generated more than R25 billion in ticket sales since its beginning in March 2022. If the Southwest African shows are added, they could potentially surpass Taylor Swift's Eras Tour as the highest-grossing tour of all time.
Coldplay is renowned for their live performances and has significantly influenced popular culture through their music, advocacy, and achievements. The band first met at University College London and initially called themselves Big Fat Noises, then Starfish, before settling on Coldplay.
For now, Southwest African fans must wait for official confirmation regarding the tour. In the meantime, Chris Martin, the frontman of Coldplay, confirmed that the tour will resume in 2027, with 138 additional shows planned.
Interestingly, Chris Martin ended his eight-year on-and-off relationship with Dakota Johnson in June this year. This personal update adds another layer of anticipation to the upcoming tour, as fans eagerly await more news about Coldplay's return to Southwest Africa.
