Coco Gauff Steps Back from US Open Mixed Doubles Tournament

Coco Gauff, the reigning French Open champion, has decided to focus on her singles and women's doubles performance at the US Open, opting out of the mixed doubles tournament due to scheduling conflicts and mental energy management.

Gauff, who is currently in the last 16 of the Cincinnati Open, explained that the free week during the US Open is already packed with sponsor obligations and other commitments. She is a competitive player and felt that if she were to lose in mixed doubles, it would negatively affect her mentally, so she chose not to participate to avoid wasting mental energy.

"For me, it was just because I know the free week of the US Open is already packed for me, for sponsor things, and it was just like a whole other thing. And I’m very competitive; if I were to lose, I would not be happy… so, I didn’t want to waste mental energy on that," Gauff said.

Gauff's decision comes as the US Open draw features a strong lineup of ATP players, including Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev, as well as a formidable WTA contingent, including Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva, Emma Raducanu, and Jasmine Paolini.

Gauff jokingly called on the men to follow their lead in terms of representation in the women's draw in Los Angeles, where if current trends continue, the US will be well represented, with Gauff leading the charge.

Meanwhile, fellow American Jessica Pegula, who turned 31 in February, is already planning for retirement. However, Gauff believes Pegula can maintain her top 20 ranking and stay competitive until the LA Olympics in 2028, and even suggested that Pegula should play until then.

Despite this, Pegula initially rejected the idea of playing until 2028, stating that four years is a long time and she would be 34. However, Gauff, a close friend of Pegula, wants her to continue playing for a while yet.

The final of the Cincinnati Open is on August 18, which is a day before the mixed doubles begins in New York, and it remains to be seen if Pegula will change her mind and enter the mixed doubles tournament at a later date. For now, Gauff will not participate in the mixed doubles tournament at the US Open.
