"Coco Gauff topples Serena Williams in an impressive performance, advancing further"
In a remarkable display of tennis prowess, 18-year-old Coco Gauff has once again proven her mettle, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Cincinnati Open. This achievement comes just a month after her triumph at the same tournament, making her the youngest champion in its history.
Gauff's journey to the quarterfinals began with a convincing victory over Lucia Bronzetti in the Round of 16. The scoreline read 6-2, 6-4, showcasing Gauff's dominance on the court.
The young American's performance in Cincinnati this year has been nothing short of spectacular. She clinched her first WTA 1000 title here, and also became the youngest champion in the tournament's history. Her semifinal win over Iga Swiatek and the eventual title victory against Karolína Muchová further cemented her status as a force to be reckoned with.
Reflecting on her most recent match, Gauff admitted that she could have played better, despite playing aggressively and appreciating her effort. She said, "For the most part I played aggressive... I was trying to play with control but also aggressive... I had chances in a couple of those games... I missed a couple balls... But I learned from it and was able to close it out."
Gauff's consistent performance at the WTA 1000 level has earned her the third-highest number of quarterfinal appearances before turning 22. With her recent quarterfinal at the 2023 Cincinnati Open, she continues to push the boundaries, aiming to claim the No.2 spot from Maria Sharapova. Martina Hingis, with an outstanding 39 quarterfinals before the age of 22, currently holds the top spot.
As Gauff turns 22 on March 13 next year, she will have the opportunity to claim the No.2 spot for most quarterfinal appearances in Tier I/WTA-1000 events before turning 22. This achievement would further solidify her position as one of the most consistent young performers at this level.
Gauff's quarterfinal match in Cincinnati will take place on Friday against either Martina Paolini or Barbora Krejcikova. The tennis world eagerly awaits to see if Gauff can continue her impressive run and secure a spot in the semifinals.
