Ah, the sweet taste of innovation! Coca-Cola's shaking things up in Germany with a fresh take on their beloved bottled beverages. Starting from April, you'll find a groovy new 0.85-liter PET bottle gracing your local stores' shelves. The refreshments lineup for this new size will include fan-favorites such as Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Fanta, Sprite, and Mezzo Mix. Be prepared, Germany – this is the first new PET single-use deposit bottle with over half a liter in the country in 17 years!

For this fun-sized update, ol' Coke has dished out 1.5 million euros to revamp three of its German plants. Now, your 0.85-liter beverage will be filled with love at the plants in Knetzgau (Lower Franconia), Genshagen (Brandenburg), and Dorsten (North Rhine-Westphalia). Needless to say, the initial filling went off without a hitch, as Coca-Cola's plant manager in Knetzgau put it. However, the excitement may not be shared by employees at other plants, considering Coca-Cola recently announced the closure of five German sites.

So What's the Big Deal?

Can't we just grab a 0.5 or a 1-liter bottle, you ask? Well, my friend, there's power in the middle! Coca-Cola insists this middle-of-the-road size is all about catering to the growing number of smaller households in Germany. Arne Koslowski, manager at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Germany, explains, "We've noticed an upward trend of smaller pack sizes for carbonated soft drinks."

While manufacturers have a tendency to use these types of justifications to, ahem, quietly increase prices, Coca-Cola's ahead of the game. To prevent the stink of shrinkflation, they've already stated that the recommended retail price for the 0.85-liter bottle will be "significantly below" that of the 1-liter PET bottle. Only time will tell how these unique new sizes will shake out on store shelves.

  2. Apart from the German plant in Knetzgau, the new bottles will be filled at plants in Genshagen (Brandenburg) and Dorsten (North Rhine-Westphalia), previously funded by a 1.5 million euros investment.
  3. Despite the closure of five other German sites, employment policy at Coca-Cola ensures the recommended retail price for the new bottles will be significantly below that of the 1-liter PET bottle, to prevent the increase in prices associated with 'shrinkflation'.
