Merz Bids Adieu to 'GroKo': Suggests New Names for CDU-SPD Alliance

Coalition government won't be labeled "Grand Coalition" by Merz

In the history of German politics, the alliance between the Union and SPD has been referred to as 'GroKo.' However, the CDU's chancellor candidate, Friedrich Merz, has openly expressed dissatisfaction with this moniker for the upcoming revival of this coalition. Merz implies that the term "GroKo" no longer fits because of the reduced parliamentary majorities.[1]

Instead, Merz proposes two possible names for the alliance: a "black-red labor coalition" or a "coalition of fresh starts and modernization."[1] These alternatives aim to represent a fresh perspective on the collaboration given the evolving political landscape in Germany.

Merz's suggestions follow the traditional pattern of four prior grand coalitions, two of which led by Kurt Georg Kiesinger and the other two under Chancellor Angela Merkel. Despite the coalition's size reduction to 45 percent, the Union will remain the stronger force.[2]

The upcoming grand coalition will be slightly different from its predecessors, but one constant remains: the Union's dominant role.

Today, the 17 expert groups from the Union and SPD are due to submit their interim results from the coalition talks. Controversial issues such as migration and taxes and finance remain to be reconciled.[2]
