In a heartbreaking incident, a tragic bus accident in the Świętokrzyskie region left a coach and the driver dead, while 17 junior football players sustained injuries. The accident took place on National Road 74 from Kielce to Opatów during the afternoon of September 21, 2024. The bus, carrying the Alit Ożarów junior team, veered off the road and crashed into a tree after the 65-year-old driver lost consciousness while driving.According to the players, the 43-year-old coach bravely attempted to seize control of the vehicle, even though his efforts were in vain. The players believe his actions prevented more casualties. "If it weren't for the coach, there could have been more victims," they said.
Although details on the causes of the accident are still under investigation, local authorities have already interviewed several witnesses. Emergency services, including four medical helicopters, were mobilized to the scene, and all injured players were swiftly transported to hospitals in Kielce, Opatów, and Staszów. While some require continued hospital care, none of their injuries are considered life-threatening at this time.
