Coach of PSG justifies reasons behind the dismissal of the team's star player
The UEFA Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Tottenham Hotspur is scheduled for 9:00 PM on Wednesday, and football fans can catch the action on DAZN and live tickered at ntv.de. However, the spotlight is not just on the match but also on the future of PSG's star goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Donnarumma, who has been a crucial figure in PSG's recent successes, including their Champions League victory last season, has been benched just before the start of the new season. The Italian goalkeeper expressed his disappointment and sadness about being removed from the team, taking to Instagram to write that someone decided he is no longer part of the team and cannot contribute to its success.
The "someone" is believed to be Luis Enrique, PSG's coach, who implemented a new salary structure involving a lower base salary plus performance incentives. Donnarumma, who currently earns a high monthly wage of €850,000, rejected this offer, seeking a pay raise.
Enrique, who prefers a goalkeeper with stronger distribution skills and comfort on the ball, has moved to sign Lille's Lucas Chevalier as PSG's new No. 1 goalkeeper. As a result, Donnarumma is set to leave PSG this summer, despite having a contract until June 2026.
Manchester City has emerged as the leading contender for Donnarumma's signature, with the two clubs in advanced talks. Donnarumma has reportedly agreed personal terms with Manchester City, seeking wages around £250,000 per week. PSG have initially set a €50 million valuation for Donnarumma, but they might lower it ahead of the deadline.
Donnarumma is not the only club interested in the Italian goalkeeper. Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester United, who are in need of goalkeeping upgrades, have also shown interest, along with Inter Milan.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Donnarumma emotionally bid farewell to PSG on Tuesday evening after being benched. If a goodbye is not possible, he wants the fans to know that their support and affection mean a lot to him.
As of now, no replacement goalkeeper for Donnarumma has been mentioned in the article. The decision to bench Donnarumma was made after PSG signed Chevalier from Lille for 40 million euros. Enrique commented on the decision, stating that it was difficult to make, but his goal is to improve the team, and the club supports his decision.
