Comeback for Goretzka: Nagelsmann recalls Bayern star to the German squad after a 16-month hiatus
- Coach Nagelsmann reintegrates Goretzka into the Germany national squad
Nagelsmann's surprising decision brings Leon Goretzka, a key midfielder for Bayern Munich, back to the German national football team following a 16-month absence. The 30-year-old, who was ousted by Nagelsmann during his major overhaul ahead of the 2024 home European Championship, has been included in the 23-man roster for the Nations League quarter-final against Italy.
The only fresh addition to the German squad is Inter Milan defender Yann Aurel Bisseck, aged 24.
"Productive conversation with Goretzka"
In an interview, Nagelsmann justified Goretzka's return by stating, "Leon's performance level has been outstanding lately." Since a difficult spell, Goretzka has regained prominence at Bayern. They engaged in a "productive conversation" prior to the call-up, focusing on rebuild their partnership.
Amiri and Adeyemi also make comebacks
In addition to Goretzka, two more players who have been sidelined for quite some time re-join the squad: The talented midfielder Nadiem Amiri (28) from Bundesliga newcomer FSV Mainz 05 gets the chance to shine once more, more than four years since his fifth and final international appearance. Forward Karim Adeyemi (20), who was part of the 2022 World Cup team, receives his first call-up under Nagelsmann. Adeyemi's inclusion is due to the absence of some key offensive players like Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz. The offensive lineup is further boosted by Mainz's Jonathan Burkardt and Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling, who recovered from injuries.
Starting goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen remains out due to a persistent knee injury. Although Nagelsmann is yet to decide on a definitive number one for the two matches, he is considering Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann and Stuttgart's Alexander Nübel for the position.
Nagelsmann aspires to guide Germany past their usual opponents, Italy, and secure a place in the final four of the Nations League for the first time. The final tournament would take place in Germany in June, with matches scheduled in Munich and Stuttgart.
