Coach Kovac of BVB expresses anger over a reckless foul, stating, "This is an assault!"
In the intense DFB Cup match between Borussia Dortmund and Rot-Weiss Essen, a late win for Dortmund was overshadowed by a controversial foul on Yan Couto. The incident, which occurred in stoppage time, saw Kelsey Owusu of Essen catch Couto's kneecap with his studs, forcing the Borussia Dortmund player to be stretchered off the pitch in pain.
The foul drew criticism from all corners, with Dortmund's coach, Niko Kovac, describing it as "grossly negligent" and "actually an assault." Kovac expressed frustration at the referee's decision to only show a yellow card instead of a red one.
Uwe Koschinat, coach of Rot-Weiss Essen, also condemned the foul, stating it was unforgivable due to its harshness. Koschinat emphasized that the foul was not due to the player's skin color, but because the action was simply inappropriate.
The injury has raised concerns about Couto's availability for future matches and put Dortmund’s defense under strain. With central defenders Nico Schlotterbeck, Emre Can, and Niklas Süle already injured, the team may have to reconsider their transfer strategy to strengthen their defense.
Kovac, however, expressed optimism about a possible severe bruise being the extent of Couto's injury. Examinations are necessary to confirm the extent of Couto's injury.
Sebastian Kehl, sporting director of Borussia Dortmund, stated that the foul on Couto was a clear red card. The incident has marred Dortmund's narrow 1-0 victory and their progression in the cup.
In a distasteful turn of events, Koschinat found it low that people would make racist comments on social media shortly after the foul. He strongly condemned such actions.
