Following a string of underwhelming results, Jahn Regensburg, last season's second division relegators, have shoved aside coach Andreas Patz. The club's latest shake-up comes with just two games left in the season.
As the club announced, Patz's tenure as Regensburg's head coach has come to an abrupt end. The second division side finds itself in search of fresh impulses and a new coaching philosophy ahead of its upcoming challenges in the third division.
After a 1:1 draw with 1. FC Köln on Saturday, Regensburg was mathematically relegated to the third division. The remaining games against Karlsruhe SC (May 11) and Darmstadt 98 (May 18) hold no sporting significance for the bottom-placed team.
In late October, Regensburg turned to Patz with the team floundering after the departure of Joe Enochs. Originally appointed as assistant coach, Patz took the helm temporarily and showed initial success before being given a contract until the end of the season.
However, the momentum did not last, and Regensburg failed to secure its place in the 2nd Bundesliga. Patz, who was personally affected by the disappointing results, believes it is the right time for a change: "I bear great responsibility for the team's development, and therefore, I believe this is a consistent and jointly made decision."
In a recent, honest, and open exchange with Patz, Sporting Director Achim Beierlorzer discussed the future coaching direction for the club: "We want to tackle the upcoming challenges with new impulses and a new profile in the coaching team."
Former co-trainer Munier Raychouni will take over the reins for the remainder of the season.
The turbulent 2024/25 second division season has seen a record-breaking seven coach dismissals to date.
