CNN extends invitation to Earle-Sears for Virginia governor's debate participation
In the upcoming Virginia gubernatorial race, Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate, and Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican nominee, will face off in a debate at Norfolk State University, hosted by WAVY-TV on October 9.
Initially, Spanberger declined CNN's invitation to debate her Republican rival, opting instead for debates hosted by local Virginia media outlets. This decision was made to focus on "Virginia broadcasters" and local issues, emphasising debate accessibility for Virginians. However, Earle-Sears accepted the CNN debate offer, leading to criticism from her campaign about Spanberger avoiding an unscripted setting.
Despite the initial refusal, Spanberger confirmed participation in the October 9 debate at Norfolk State University, marking the first agreed debate between the two candidates in this election cycle. Prior to this, potential debates either were declined by one or both candidates or canceled, including a "People’s Debate" at Virginia State University and a Virginia Bar Association-hosted event.
Earle-Sears' team expressed eagerness to debate Spanberger and hopes she accepts CNN's invitation. The CNN Gubernatorial Town Hall Debate is yet to be scheduled for a specific date in late September or early October. It is worth noting that CNN has a history of moderating significant political debates, having moderated over 190 town halls, 13 presidential primary debates, and two general election debates since 2015.
The upcoming Virginia governor's election is one of two governor's races in the year following the presidential election and is being closely watched as a potential bellwether ahead of next year's midterms.
The "People's Debate" is scheduled for September 16 at Virginia State University, with Spanberger formally accepting the invitation. Earle-Sears, however, declined due to a scheduling conflict with her official schedule on Sept. 16.
Abigail Spanberger's team declined to comment on the CNN debate or her future plans. Peyton Vogel, Earle-Sears' campaign spokeswoman, stated that Earle-Sears is not afraid to answer tough questions and face voters directly.
In a recent development, the Virginia Police Benevolent Association endorsed Spanberger for governor, adding to the political landscape of the race. With the election approaching, both candidates are gearing up for a fierce contest.
The debate at Norfolk State University will be moderated by network anchors, and questions will be posed directly by voters, similar to the earlier mentioned CNN forum. The debate promises to provide a platform for both candidates to present their views and engage with voters directly.
