Club terminates head coach following two days of competition
Waldhof Mannheim Part Ways with Coach Dominik Glawogger After Disappointing Start
Waldhof Mannheim, a football club based in Mannheim, Germany, and currently playing in the third division of German football, have parted ways with head coach Dominik Glawogger after just two games into the 2025/26 season.
The decision to fire Glawogger was due to the club's dissatisfaction with the team's disappointing start, having earned only one point from those two matches. The club's poor form, with a 2-2 draw against SC Verl and a 0-1 loss at Hansa Rostock, led to the decision.
Glawogger took over from Bernhard Trares on the 33rd matchday of the previous season and helped secure the team's league status. However, despite continuity in personnel, the club has not made the next step in sporting development at the start of the current season.
Gerhard Zuber, the sporting director of Mannheim, announced the decision and expressed gratitude to Glawogger for his commitment. Zuber justified the decision by referencing the club's need for progress that was not realized.
No replacement for Glawogger has been announced by the Mannheimer as of the press release on Monday evening. However, former professional Bernhard Trares, who has had two stints as coach for Waldhof Mannheim, may be a potential candidate.
Luc Holtz, with experience as Luxembourg's national team coach, has been appointed as the new head coach. Mannheim was positioned 15th in the third division at the time of this coaching change.
Dominik Glawogger, a 35-year-old Austrian coach, took on the responsibility of coach in a difficult phase in April and helped secure the club's survival. Under his leadership, Waldhof Mannheim secured two wins and ultimately survived relegation.
The reasons for the poor sporting development and the need for a change in the coaching position were due to some developments in recent weeks. The club paid a transfer fee to Jahn Regensburg for Glawogger, as he had already agreed to coach their U19 team for the current season.
Since their promotion to the 3. Liga in 2020, Waldhof Mannheim has already gone through seven coaches, highlighting the club's instability and the challenges they face in their quest for success.
