Club Leon's ban remains, opening up opportunity for Chelsea in Club World Cup competition.
Revamped Rant:
Looks like the final team for Group D at the Club World Cup 2025 ain't set in stone yet, mate. Initial contender, Club León, got the boot due to some shady business with another Mexican team in the tournament, Pachuca, as ruled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Now, they're having a one-off scrap between LAFC and Club America to determine the lucky chap who'll take up the empty spot. The CAS was all, "Yep, Fifa's decision to exclude León was legit, and the regulations about multiple club ownership were violated."
As for Deportiva Alajuelense, they tried to make a scene too, arguing they should've taken León's spot based on their continental ranking. That appeal, like León's, got the old heave-ho from CAS.
So, Fifa's got to fill that vacant slot, and as of right now, it's anyone's guess who that'll be. The current Group D lineup's looking like this: CR Flamengo, Espérance de Tunis, Chelsea, and an empty spot, waitin' to be filled by our dear friends from CONCACAF.
In case Chelsea ends up playing LAFC, they're in for a reunion with their former striker Olivier Giroud and ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Oh, and Chelsea and Manchester City are the two English teams gracing the 32-team tournament, which takes place in the US from June 14 to July 13.
