Get ready for the FIFA Mega Club World Cup, but don't count on everyone playing fair. Club León, the Mexican powerhouse, has been given the boot due to dubious ownership, leaving FIFA scrambling for a replacement.
With the Club World Cup set to commence this June (14th-13th), FIFA has yanked Club León from the roster, and they're asking who's gonna step in as the 32nd team. The host committee announced that Club León won't make it to this summer's tournament after a breach of competition rules. FIFA revealed that the club and CF Pachuca (also Mexican) are under the same ownership - José de Jesús Martínez Patino.
"FIFA's bosses have deemed that these clubs don't fit the (...) criteria for multiple club ownership," FIFA declared. Back in November 2024, FIFA launched an independent probe into the clubs' operations, giving them a chance to defend their independence. However, the conclusion: they're NOT separate entities.
Club León, featuring ex-Bayern Munich star James Rodríguez, was thrown into Group D and slated to face off with FC Chelsea in Atlanta on June 16. FIFA hinted that a replacement would soon be announced. There's buzz all over the place that Al-Nassr from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, home to none other than superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, could be the newcomer, meaning Messi with Inter Miami wouldn't be alone in representing eternal rivalry.
Club León ain't having it. They're stunned, and in a statement, they tossed documents that prove their financial, administrative, and sporting independence. If FIFA enforces the expulsion, they're promising an appeal to the highest court.
The Club World Cup will be hosted as a four-week blowout for the first time ever. Europe dominates the scene with 12 teams, including your favorites, Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Psst... Al-Nassr participated in the 2025 tournament, but not the 2023 one. Manchester City took home the 2023 trophy, just FYI. If you're hankering for dirt on Al-Nassr or Ronaldo's potential future appearances, keep your eyes on FIFA announcements and the latest news.

- The European Parliament and Council might discuss the exclusion of Club Leon from the FIFA Club World Cup, since the club is owned by the same person who owns CF Pachuca, a decision that has caused controversy within the sports world.
- Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr, a Saudi Arabian club, is rumored to join the FIFA Club World Cup as a replacement for Club Leon, creating an eternal rivalry with Messi's Inter Miami, if the former is officially announced as the newcomer.
- The European Parliament and Council could express their concerns over FIFA's power and the potential consequences of the exclusion of Club Leon, given the organization's strong influence in CONCACAF and other international sports organizations.
