Club Berghain under scrutiny for terminating performer's gig over pro-Palestinian beliefs

Berghain, one of Berlin's most famous cultural landmarks, has found itself at the centre of a heated controversy. The nightclub, known for its inclusive and diverse music scene, has been accused of political bias following the cancellation of Arabian Panther's gig on 14th December.

The accusation was made in a detailed Instagram post released earlier this week by the musician, who pledged to donate the fee they will still receive according to their contract to Medical Aid for Palestinians. The cancellation marks the first time Berghain has been accused of political bias in regards to the artists they platform.

The controversy comes after Hamas attacks in October and changes to cultural funding law in Berlin. Explicitly left-wing institutions like Oyoun have had their funding cut as a result of these changes, and since then, artistic institutions in Berlin have been under scrutiny for the political positions of the artists they platform.

The reason given for the cancellation was Arabian Panther's outspoken pro-Palestine stance and the "global communication" on their networks, which became difficult in the current context. Some deleted Instagram stories posted by Arabian Panther may have also played a role in Berghain's decision.

However, the stories in question deny claims of rape around the events of October 7, but Berghain has still made no comment on this matter. The search results do not provide information about the name of the booker responsible for Arabian Panther's gig at Berghain.

Other politically outspoken artistic spaces have been noted for their silence regarding political positions, adding fuel to the fire of the ongoing debate. The controversy follows changes to cultural funding law in Berlin, which have put artistic institutions under scrutiny for the political positions of the artists they platform.

It remains to be seen how this controversy will unfold and whether Berghain will issue a statement regarding the cancellation and the allegations of political bias. In the meantime, the music community and the public continue to discuss the implications of this incident for artistic freedom and political expression.
