"Closure Announced for Bamberg Brewery: Enjoyable Era Comes to an End"
In a recent announcement, the operators of Spiegelbrau, a popular brewery in the Bamberg area, have decided to end the project temporarily. Founded by Tobias Spiegel in 2019, the brewery has faced increasing challenges over time, culminating in the decision to close its doors.
Initially, Spiegel brewed small batches in his kitchen, and after several years, he moved his brewing activities to his garage. The brewery, known for its traditional Franconian beer styles, gained a strong brand presence with the support of its loyal customers.
The closure of Spiegelbrau comes amidst a trend of historically low beer sales in German breweries. The 2024 football EM in Germany could not stop this negative trend, and export opportunities for German breweries have significantly deteriorated, especially due to high tariffs in the USA.
Unfortunately, a new location suitable for Spiegelbrau was not found, and the partner brewery, Brauhaus Binkert, has been shut down since this year. Our colleagues from Fränkischen Tag (Plus) detailed the reasons for the closure of Brauhaus Binkert in the spring.
Despite the closure of Spiegelbrau, there are many excellent beers available in the region. The Lammbrau in Strullendorf, a historical brewery and inn, was acquired by the municipality of Strullendorf in 2023 to give it a new purpose.
The operators of Spiegelbrau expressed their gratitude for the past experiences and celebrations. They published a farewell contribution online, reminiscing about the good times and the support they received from their customers. Despite the challenges, they remain optimistic about the future of the beer industry in Germany.
As Spiegelbrau closes its doors, the beer community in the Bamberg area and beyond will remember the unique flavours and traditions that Tobias Spiegel brought to the industry. The operators of Spiegelbrau have made a significant contribution to the beer scene, and their legacy will continue to inspire future brewers.
