Closing chapter - PUBG discontinues Xbox One service in significant update
In the gaming world, the curtain is beginning to fall on support for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (PS4) consoles. Some of the most popular multiplayer and live service games, such as PUBG (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds), Rust, The First Descendant, and Genshin Impact, are either ending or have ended their support for these platforms.
PUBG, a game that made its console debut on Xbox One back in 2017, will cease to be accessible on these consoles from November 13, 2025. After this date, the game will move exclusively to the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X|S, in a bid to improve performance and stability.
The trend is not limited to PUBG alone. Many live service games and online multiplayer titles are expected to start dropping support for the PS4 from 2026, due to technical limitations and the increasing PlayStation 5 install base. Sony itself is winding down PS4 features, with PS Plus focusing on PS5 games starting from January 2026.
Rust and The First Descendant have already ended their PS4 support in May and June 2025, respectively. Genshin Impact is delisting its PS4 version for new users from September 2025, with full support ending in early April 2026.
Some next-gen games are fully skipping the Xbox One and PS4, like Battlefield 6, while others, such as Madden NFL 26, will not appear on last-gen consoles.
The change is part of an essential update to take advantage of current-gen hardware. Krafton, the developer of PUBG, announced the move in a recent news post on PUBG's Korean site. The update aims to improve visuals and provide more stable framerates.
As we move into the fifth year of the current console generation, both Xbox Series X|S and PS5 are receiving a healthy amount of current-gen only games. However, not all is lost for last-gen console owners. Games like Call of Duty's next yearly release, Black Ops 7, will still be released on last-gen consoles. Similarly, EA Sports FC 26 will launch on last-gen consoles.
Rust: Console Edition is ending support for last-gen consoles this year, with servers closing in October. Hunt: Showdown ended support for Xbox One and PS4 after being on these platforms for roughly three years.
As rumors swirl about the next console generation, it seems the end of the current generation may be near. Yet, for now, gamers can still enjoy their favourite multiplayer games on their Xbox One and PS4, with some adjustments and updates along the way.
