The Scorching Heat Wave at Rad Classic Eschborn-Frankfurt: A Failed Offensive, an Aussie Triumph

Failure in combating heatstroke in Hesse, Australia emerges triumphant - Close call in Hesse: thwarted assault, Australian triumph

Let's dive into the aftermath of the 62nd edition of the Rad Classic Eschborn-Frankfurt, where tension was high and spirits were mixed.

Frustration loomed over Maximilian Schachmann, who put up an aggressive fight in the heat race, yet remained dissatisfied with his ninth-place finish. Meanwhile, Australian Michael Matthews - a 34-year-old veteran - managed to end a 40-year-long dry spell for Australian riders at this traditional event. A fierce sprint in front of the Old Opera in Frankfurt sealed the victory, making Matthews the first Australian to win this race since Phil Anderson in 1985. Danish Danish rider Magnus Cort finished a close second, with Spanish Jon Barrenetxea rounding out the podium.

A Failed Attack for Schachmann

Matthews' triumph was not without German pros' disappointed faces. "Honestly, nothing" was Schachmann's response when asked about any possible missteps. His ambitious attack, launched near the Mammolshainer Stich about 35 kilometers from the finish line, fell flat - partly due to Norwegian rider Andreas Leknessund's reluctance to cooperate within the three-man group that included Schachmann and Austrian Gregor Mühlberger. "I wanted to give the spectators something today and drove full speed," a disappointed Schachmann shared, finishing 29th.

A Sprint Struggle for Denz

In the final sprint, Schachmann found himself up against the ropes. Nico Denz, on the other hand, was left feeling underwhelmed, boxed in by the competition on the final meters. The 31-year-old professional from the Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe team shared his disappointment, "I could have done more."

A Noticeable Absence

Local hero John Degenkolb missed out on this prestigious race due to injuries sustained at the Tour of Flanders almost four weeks prior. Despite his absence, the 36-year-old watched the race as a spectator, hopeful for a swift recovery.

The Heat Factor

Originally known as "Rund um den Henninger-Turm" and later renamed, the race has been held since 1962. The challenging course, paired with a scorching 30-degree heat, posed an additional burden on the riders. Native Hesse Jonas Rutsch, who didn't factor into the race, explained the heat as an "additional strain." Schachmann described the heat as a "catalyst" that made it even harder for the sprinters. The combination of the course and heat couldn't deter the tenacious winner, Matthews.
