Clinton Tapes Discussion with Author Taylor Branch Scheduled at National Archives for October 7, Press Release on September 25, 2009

On Wednesday, October 7, at 7 p.m., Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor Branch will discuss his new book, "The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President," at the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building.

The event, in partnership with the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, promises to offer a unique insight into the Clinton presidency. The book is based on over 70 recorded sessions of private conversations between Branch and President Bill Clinton during his presidency from 1993 to 2001.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, the public can call the Public Programs Line at (202) 357-5000. A book signing will follow the program, and featured books will be available for purchase in the Archives Shop before or during the event at a 15% discount.

The National Archives Building, located at Constitution Avenue and 7th Street, NW, is Metro accessible on the Yellow and Green lines, Archives/Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter station.

Taylor Branch is not only an author of this intriguing book but also a writer of two nonfiction books and a novel. Prior to his writing career, he was a staff member of The Washington Monthly, Harper's, and Esquire.

Over seven years while in office, President Clinton described what it's like to be president to Branch. Immediately after each of the seventy-nine sessions, Branch recorded his reactions to their conversations.

The book offers a detailed inside look at Clinton's decision-making processes and struggles as president, making it a significant historical account of his time in the White House. For example, it includes Clinton's candid discussion of the U.S. and European allies' handling of the Bosnian War, revealing the complex diplomatic and moral calculations involved.

For those interested in learning more about the event, the National Archives Public Affairs Staff can be contacted for press information at (202) 357-5300. The event details can also be found on the Calendar of Events online.
