"Climber Huberbuam discusses Dahlmeier's demise, sharing fresh insights"
Tragic Mountaineering Accident Claims Life of Two-Time Olympic Biathlon Champion Laura Dahlmeier
Laura Dahlmeier, a two-time Olympic biathlon champion, lost her life on July 28, 2025, during a mountaineering expedition in Pakistan's Karakoram range. The accident occurred on Laila Peak (6,069 meters) in the Hushe Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Dahlmeier was climbing with her partner, Marina Eva, when a sudden rockfall struck them at approximately 18,700 feet (around 5,700 meters). Dahlmeier sustained severe injuries that proved fatal on the spot, while Eva managed to send a distress signal and descend to base camp with rescuers' assistance on July 29.
Rescue efforts were hampered by poor weather conditions, including rain, high winds, and low visibility, which prevented helicopters from reaching the accident site promptly. The remote and rugged terrain of Laila Peak, as well as the risk of additional rockfalls, further complicated rescue attempts, forcing authorities to call off the recovery mission on the evening of July 29.
An international rescue team and local porters initiated search efforts, but the severity of Dahlmeier's injuries and ongoing weather challenges made it impossible to recover her body. Her death was confirmed by her management a few days later.
According to her wishes, Dahlmeier's body remains in the area. The Laila Peak, where the accident occurred, remains open to climbers.
Thomas Huber, a mountain guide and friend of Dahlmeier, was part of the rescue team. He stated that the conditions during Dahlmeier's ascent were initially good and safe, but the mountain was different the next day. Huber, who was injured while climbing in the Alps in 2023, expressed that every risk is too much once a person is dead.
This tragic event marks the third mountaineering-related death in the region this year. Closing mountains after accidents is not a common practice in the region where Laila Peak is located. A memorial has been set up in her hometown of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The unexpected heatwave is believed to have caused the accident that led to Dahlmeier's death.
