Climate objectives of EU leaders approach critical deadline prior to COP summit
Our independent climate change organization, with a global outlook and a presence in Berlin and Brussels, is sounding the alarm about the European Union's (EU) progress in meeting its climate targets.
According to Steffen Menzel, Programme Lead at our organization in Berlin, Europe is falling short in its role as a standard-bearer for the clean transition. He believes that the EU is failing its citizens, industry, and international partners at a critical moment. The EU, as a major emitter, must honour its obligations under the Paris Agreement, Menzel emphasises.
Menzel is also available for comment on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and EU foreign policy. His concerns are shared by Manon Dufour, Executive Director at our organization in Brussels, who is also available for comment on EU politics.
Marc Weissgerber, Executive Director at our organization in Berlin, stresses the importance of Germany demonstrating leadership at this critical diplomatic juncture for the EU. He believes that Germany's proactive role is crucial for meeting its own national climate objectives, upholding political credibility, and securing the international competitiveness of the European and German economy.
However, Weissgerber expressed disappointment about the repeated delays and lack of clarity surrounding the EU's 2035 NDC. He believes that these delays could jeopardise the EU's ability to meet its 2040 target.
Elisa Giannelli, Programme Lead at our organization, is also available for comment on EU politics and the 2040 target. The organization's experts are committed to providing insights and analysis to help navigate the complex world of climate policy.
It is reported that the EU member state likely still blocking the negotiations on the 90% emissions target until the heads of state meeting at the end of October 2023 is Hungary. The EU's progress in addressing climate change remains a topic of ongoing debate and concern for our organization and its experts.
