Activists from Letzte Generation, a climate protection group, have added a vibrant touch to several German cities this season. Their weapon of choice? Orange paint, which adorned Christmas trees in two notable Berlin locations on Wednesday morning.
Leipziger Platz's large Christmas tree at the Mall of Berlin shopping center and the one in front of nearby Bundesrat were the colourful casualties of this environmental crusade. Demonstrators, armed with fire extinguishers, painted these trees and documented their actions for posterity, as reported by the police.
At least four suspects are under investigation by the authorities, as a result of the colourful actions. Police carried out searches in homes located in Wedding, Wilmersdorf, and Hansaviertel, confiscating essentials for street protests from climate activists.
Following the spraying incident, two demonstrators stood near the Bundesrat, bearing placards that read, "Thoughtfully marching towards the catastrophe? Charity equals climate protection." In their opinion, the festive mood of the holidays should not obscure the gravity of climate change. The world, they argue, is headed towards a future replete with catastrophes.
The Last Generation group touched up a Christmas tree in Leipzig's Mädler Passage, according to their account. Police patrolled the area, cordoning it off. As per police or the group's reports, other trees in Munich, Nuremberg, Oldenburg, Rostock, and Kiel also bore this new coat of paint.
Letzte Generation is a relentless advocate for climate protection, marked by their actions since the beginning of 2022. They have utilised various tactics, including street blockades and demonstrations, attracting attention with their activism at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.
Repercussions of these climate-conscious efforts were evident in another corner of Berlin-Lichtenberg as well. During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, an alternative climate protection organization deflated the tires of numerous cars or destroyed some, leaving flyers from the group "The Tyre Extinguishers" behind. By midday on Wednesday, the police had received 31 reports from car owners who had discovered their vehicles with flat tires.
