Cleves police crack down on reckless drivers in freezing winter operation

Police in the Cleves district carried out a large-scale traffic operation on Thursday, January 29, 2026. The crackdown aimed to reduce serious accidents by enforcing road safety rules across key locations. Officers worked through freezing temperatures and light snow to monitor drivers between 6:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Checkpoints were set up in Kalkar, Kevelaer, Geldern, and Kleve. Authorities recorded a total of 126 speeding offences, with 12 resulting in fines. Fifteen drivers ignored right-of-way rules, while 18 were caught not wearing seatbelts.

A truck's licence plates were seized after checks revealed the vehicle was listed in an international wanted database. The truck was immediately banned from continuing its trip. Eight cases of poorly secured loads were also documented, alongside seven drivers using mobile phones illegally.

An 18-year-old man from Issum faced a blood test after officers suspected prior drug use. Additionally, 18 warnings were given for faulty or obscured lighting, and another 18 for minor traffic violations.

The operation highlighted widespread traffic violations despite harsh winter weather. Police issued warnings, fines, and vehicle restrictions to enforce compliance. The results will be used to shape future road safety measures in the district.
