Hang onto your hats, NBA fans, because Darius Garland, the dynamic guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been through the wringer—and come out swinging! Remember when he was silenced during the 2024 NBA All-Star break, all thanks to a fractured jaw from an in-game collision? Yep, that was him! But the show must go on, and go on it did.

After recovering from a jaw mended in a wire-tight vise, Garland found himself struggling to make his voice heard both on and off the court. The broken jaw was certainly only one of many obstacles Garland faced last season, with his on-court performances more subdued than the NBA was used to.

The Cavaliers, too, took a hit, winning 48 games in '23-'24, while the prior year they had notched 51 victories. In the playoffs, a still-healing Garland seemed lacking, and by the time the Boston Celtics had bounced Cleveland in five games during the second round, he was hardly playing up to his former All-Star form.

Plenty of big-picture questions arose. Could Garland's past injuries have permanently diminished his All-Star prowess? Was there tension between him and backcourt partner Donovan Mitchell? Had the Cavs reached their ceiling?

Fast-forward to the following season, and almost every question has been answered, with Garland earning a second All-Star nod in February. Not only that, but he and Mitchell thrived together, propelling the Cavs to their second-highest win total in franchise history, securing the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

"You hear me talking, right? I stayed the course, and I'm dang proud of it," Garland told NBC News before the start of the playoffs. "This team has come a long way, and I can't wait to see us contend for a championship."

The journey hasn't been smooth sailing for Garland and the Cavs. Their '22 All-Star season ended in the play-in tournament. Swiftly after, Cleveland recruited Mitchell, sparking speculation of exalted expectations. But in Mitchell's first year, the team was bumped out in the first round by the New York Knicks. And the ensuing offseason saw murmurs about whether Garland truly wanted to share the backcourt with Mitchell, following a disappointing finish to the season.

Instead of jumping ship, however, Garland rolled up his sleeves, resolved to work hand-in-glove with Mitchell.

"I had some serious chats with Don to discern what he really likes, and nail down my own desires for this offense," Garland shared.

Ongoing dialogue wasn't the only means through which Garland sought to better mesh with Mitchell. He spent hours engrossed in game footage, studying up on Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, and seeking to borrow a few moves to create chaos on defenses.

"I gotta make smart cuts to get my teammates open," Garland admitted. "Sometimes I gotta slip in silently to add some pressure to the defense. Just moving without the ball helps my teammates get open looks."

Under the tutelage of new head coach Kenny Atkinson, who joined the team in June, Garland and the Cavaliers took their game to a new level in the '24-'25 season. With a net rating of 9.2 during the regular season, the franchise's best mark since 2009, Cleveland seemed primed for success.

Garland fine-tuned his role in the backcourt, forgoing some scoring for more efficient play. He sunk a career-best 47.2% of his field goals during the regular season, with an impressive 40.1% from 3-point territory on 7.1 attempts per night.

"Beautiful basketball played by everyone, everyone's touchin' the rock, enjoyin' their time on the court together," Garland raved about his team's success. "Our depth is off the charts. Sometimes you might not know their names, but they'll drop three crazy shots right in front of your face."

But midway through the first round of the playoffs, another obstacle appeared. A toe injury sidelined Garland for the last two games of their sweep against the Miami Heat, and then for the first two games of their confrontation against the Indiana Pacers, putting Cleveland in a 0-2 hole.

While the Heat series sweep served as an impressive demonstration of the dominance the Cavaliers have displayed all season, Garland recognizes that this team's legacy depends on surpassing last year's playoff finish. Along with the lessons learned from the Cavaliers' '23 postseason exploits, Garland understands the importance of small details, like minimizing turnovers, capitalizing on fast break opportunities, and seizing rebounds.

(Remember, it was a missed offensive board that led Tyrese Haliburton to score the game-winning 3 in Game 2.)

It hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows for Garland in his career, but he's consistently managed to bounce back. So as the Cavaliers trail the Pacers 0-2, Garland has the chance to make the loudest statement of his career yet.

  1. Garland's basketball journey with the Cleveland Cavaliers has been filled with challenges, including a fractured jaw during the 2024 NBA All-Star break and several setbacks during the previous season.
  2. Despite these hardships, Garland has proven his resilience, earning a second All-Star nod in February 2025 and leading the Cavaliers to their second-highest win total in franchise history.
  3. During the playoffs, Garland has faced another obstacle: a toe injury that sidelined him for the beginning of the series against the Indiana Pacers, putting the team in a 0-2 hole.
  4. In the world of sports, particularly basketball and the NBA, Garland's ability to recover from setbacks and continue trading impressive performances on the court serves as an inspiring example for fans and players alike.
