Clete Willems Discusses Post-Election Trade Relations Between the U.S. and China with CNBC
In a recent interview with CNBC, Clete Willems, a lawyer and partner at Gump public law and policy, shared his insights on the potential trajectory of U.S.-China relations under a Biden presidency.
Willems, who previously served as the Chief Counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, stated that being tough on China is what unifies the U.S. in these polarized times. He further suggested that China will have to deal with a more predictable U.S. policy under a Biden administration.
In the interview, Willems clarified that there will be no tweets announcing tariffs in the middle of the night under a Biden presidency, as opposed to the current administration's approach. However, he also predicted that if former Vice President Joe Biden wins the U.S. presidential election, he will be constrained by the political environment and may not revert to some of the China positions he held in the past that some saw as relatively weak.
Willems appeared on the Squawk Box Asia program to discuss these matters, and his comments have been widely quoted in the CNBC.com article "Being tough on China is what unifies a polarized U.S., former trade negotiator says."
Overall, Willems maintained that the United States' relationship with China will remain more or less status quo, regardless of the U.S. presidential election outcome. He also predicted that there will be more predictability in Biden's policies.
