Sunny Skies Ahead: Temperatures Rise This Weekend in Germany, but Drought Warnings Persist

Clear, arid conditions are prevailing with increasing sunshine.

Get ready for warmer weather this weekend, folks! Germany is looking at a slight temperature increase, thanks to the waning influence of the Ice Saints, as per ntv meteorologist Carlo Pfaff. But while we're welcoming the warmth, we gotta keep an eye on those drought conditions.

Depending on the region, temperatures could reach up to 25 degrees Celsius this weekend! Meanwhile, it'll stay coolest along the Baltic Sea with a forecast of 15 degrees. And best of all? You can expect plenty of sunshine nationwide, with 10 to 15 hours of sunshine from the North Sea to the Black Forest!

However, beware of the increasing forest fire risk and the growing burden of grass pollen. The real worry, though? The much too low rainfall amounts in recent weeks. We've collected just 58 liters of rain per square meter since the start of meteorological spring on March 1. So dry, it's looking like this season could break records as the driest since weather records began! Until at least the middle of the week, there's no significant rainfall in sight.

Drought has been a recurring theme in recent weeks, with Germany experiencing a record dry spell in early 2025. The period from February 1 to April 13 saw just 40 liters per square meter of rain - the lowest since records began in 1931. This extreme dryness has been a significant concern across northern Europe, with southern Europe experiencing more rainfall.

But what about Italy? South of the Alps, they've seen recurring low-pressure systems moving towards the Balkans, leading to heavy rainfall in the southern Alps, while regions north of the Alps have received little to no rain. For instance, Munich has received only 70 liters of rain in the same period, while Ascona in Switzerland has seen around 600 liters - the equivalent of Berlin's yearly rainfall!

  1. Despite the warmer weather heading to Germany this weekend, scientists warn about the ongoing drought conditions, which could have severe impacts on the water supply and contribute to climate change.
  2. The persistent drought in Germany is a significant concern, as it continues to break records, and with no significant rainfall in sight, it could lead to more extreme weather events in the future, affecting both the environment and water supply.
