Riding the Wave of Promotion Amidst the Chaos: Funkel Navigates Cologne's Controversial Waters

Here comes the rollercoaster ride for Cologne fans - just one point against Kaiserslautern on Sunday will seal the long-awaited return to the Bundesliga. But the storm brewing around striker Tim Lemperle after a booze-fueled brawl threatens to spoil the celebration. Coach Friedhelm Funkel, however, remains undeterred.

After a nail-biting win in Nuremberg, Cologne is once again feeling the promotion buzz under interim coach Funkel. However, the party atmosphere surrounding Lemperle is creating turbulence - a factor Funkel could do without. The showdown against 1. FC Kaiserslautern (Sky, 3:15 PM, and live ticker at ntv.de) is all about promotion, and nothing else.

Despite the headlines suggesting a possible risk to promotion, Funkel maintains that the incident won't affect the game. "The promotion is not at stake. It exerts no influence on the game or the performance on Sunday," Funkel emphasized at the press conference before the deciding match against FCK. It's ironically the same club that Funkel led to a critical league survival last year and guided to the DFB-Pokal final.

Whether Lemperle, who shares top spot as Cologne's most prolific scorer this season with ten goals alongside Damion Downs, will take the field is up in the air - not due to disciplinary reasons, but due to health matters. Lemperle, who is expected to join TSG 1899 Hoffenheim next season, was heavily intoxicated on a party boat on the Rhine on Sunday night and got into a physical altercation, resulting in injuries. In addition to his bruised dignity, Lemperle is also grappling with knee issues.

"Tim has trained a bit with the team today for the first time. His knee problems continue to bother him, so we'll see how he reacts tomorrow. After that, we'll decide whether he'll play or not," said Funkel with a concerned tone. "From a moral standpoint, there's no issue for me to give playing time to Tim," Funkel added, highlighting Lemperle's remorse over the incident. When queried about the club's stance on the matter, Funkel stated, "I make the sporting decisions."

The unrest in Cologne isn't confined to Lemperle. The management parted ways with coach Gerhard Struber and sporting director Christian Keller just before the season's end. Two games before the end, veteran Funkel resurrected for the third time at FC. He now aims to steer the club to its seventh Bundesliga promotion - and his seventh as a coach.

Just a year after the relegation, which was largely due to a transfer ban, Cologne stands a chance to return to the Bundesliga. Against Kaiserslautern, a point will suffice. However, SV Elversberg, SC Paderborn, and even opponents like Fortuna Düsseldorf and Kaiserslautern have lingering promotion hopes. In the worst-case scenario, Cologne could finish fourth, and all promotion dreams would evaporate. "I'm convinced that we don't need any help. We can do it ourselves," said Funkel with unshakeable optimism.

Despite the 71-year-old Funkel's seasoned calm, the expectations placed on him are significant. "On one hand, I'm calm about it, but it's also a great feeling, and perhaps a little burden. But it's not a heavy load, I can handle it," Funkel shared about the pressure. As for the team's crucial needs, "Stay calm, exude confidence, trust the team, and bring a certain lightness," Funkel advised. With Funkel at the helm, Cologne fans might just sail through this bizarre, yet potentially salvageable, season.
