Sahra Wagenknecht Slams Corona Commission as Inadequate, Demands Apology and Amnesty for Fines

BSW co-founder, Sahra Wagenknecht, scorns the intended corona inquiry commission in the Bundestag, deeming it inadequate. "A feeble attempt at political masking that falls far short of what's necessary to address the corona period," Wagenknecht stated to the editorial network Germany (RND).

Wagenknecht argues that the investigation should not focus solely on the mask scandal, with Jens Spahn supposedly at fault. Instead, she claims that far graver errors have been committed, even amounting to unparalleled injustice.

The Bundestag plans to establish the corona inquiry commission at the urging of ruling factions this Wednesday. Investigations will focus on the high prices for masks and Spahn's actions, among other matters.

Wagenknecht laments the lack of compensation for victims and amnesty for fines and penalties assessed during the pandemic. She told RND that school and kindergarten closures, as well as nursing home lockdowns, were drastically misguided. Additionally, she deplores political pressure on dissenters and the vaccine mandate, which she views as a gross infringement on civil liberties in a free, law-abiding country previously unfamiliar with such coercion.

Wagenknecht also denounces the corona policy as a "reign of injustice" and insists that the government should offer an apology to the populace, taking responsibility for their predecessors' actions.

Controversy surrounds the acquisition of protective masks at elevated prices during the pandemic, which will be discussed in the Bundestag on Wednesday. Health Minister Nina Warken and former Minister Jens Spahn, both CDU members, will give testimony in the budget committee. The focus will be a report by special investigator Margaretha Sudhof, who was commissioned by Warken's predecessor Karl Lauterbach in 2024. The report aims to address Spahn's earlier decisions regarding mask procurement and logistics companies. The government faces potential financial risks from ongoing legal disputes with companies.

While no direct sources explicitly outline Wagenknecht's stance, her political profile suggests that she has been critical of certain pandemic restrictions and has advocated for leniency towards those penalized during the pandemic, including demands for amnesty or forgiveness for corona fines. Her background demonstrates that she has long been a vocal critic of the government's measures in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sahra Wagenknecht, in her critique of the upcoming coronavirus inquiry commission, condems it as a shallow act of political cover-up, falling significantly short of the comprehensive investigation needed to scrutinize the government's handling of the pandemic. Furthermore, she emphasizes the need for a revised approach in the form of fair compensation for victims, amnesty for pandemic-related fines, and a review of general-news policies that oversaw questionable decisions, such as school and kindergarten closures, nursing home lockdowns, and the controversial vaccine mandate. The community and employment policies, she argues, should be reevaluated in light of their impact on civil liberties and the extent of their coercion in a free and law-abiding nation.
