The Opéra Bastille in Paris is currently hosting an extraordinary visual experience, as Claus Guth's production of La Bohème takes centre stage. This indispensable interstellar journey, set in a distressed spaceship, offers a unique twist on the 19th-century Parisian setting of the original novel by Henry Murger, published in 1851.

La Bohème is a twilight, nostalgic journey that tells the story of a social class of penniless artists who mock conventions and enjoy life without restraint. The opera, under the musical direction of Domingo Hindoyan, is conducted by the maestro himself, providing a powerful and emotive soundtrack to the production.

The stage direction is masterfully handled by Claus Guth, who coexists two temporalities in this production: one in an indeterminate and dying future, and the other representing the old world. The sets, designed by Étienne Pluss, and the costumes, designed by Eva Dessecker, perfectly capture this duality, creating a visually stunning performance.

The cast includes an array of talented performers, with Nicole Car masterfully incarnating Mimi, Rodolfo's love interest. Other notable performances come from Yaritza Vélez, Charles Castronovo, Joshua Guerrero, Andrea Carroll, Étienne Dupuis, Xiaomeng Zhang, and Alexandros Stavrakakis. The lights, designed by Fabrice Kebour, add an extra layer of magic to the production, illuminating the spaceship in a way that enhances the storytelling.

La Bohème, once reviled by a portion of the audience, has now become a classic. The performances will continue at the Opéra Bastille until October 14th, 2025, providing audiences with a chance to experience this unique interpretation of Puccini's timeless opera.
