Claudio Cadonau’s bold leadership transforms SCRJ’s season with grit and vision

Claudio Cadonau has made a strong start as sports director of SC Rapperswil-Jona (SCRJ). The 37-year-old took over after Janick Steinmann left for Lugano. Under his leadership qualities, the team has shown both highs and challenges in the current season.

Cadonau stepped into the role with a background as a former National League player, having represented ZSC Lions, Biel, Langnau, and Zug. His transition from player to executive went smoothly, helped by early success and a supportive team. He admits to learning every day but credits his experience as a teammate for shaping his approach to building a squad.

SCRJ began the season impressively, winning 13 of their first 16 games, including a seven-match winning streak. Despite this strong run, Cadonau stayed grounded, acknowledging that the team had overperformed. A subsequent seven-game losing streak tested their resilience, but they have since stabilised. Currently, the team sits in seventh place, holding a 12-point lead over the first non-playoff spot and a seven-point gap above ninth. Cadonau has worked closely with head coach Johan Lundskog, describing their partnership as a 'stroke of luck' and a source of mutual enjoyment. Together, they have secured key players for the future, including a four-season contract extension for Tyler Moy, who is set to become a long-term pillar of the team. The sports director has also brought in new talent, such as Fabrice Herzog, and retained Daniil Ustinkov for next season. While SCRJ has not officially announced any further signings beyond these moves, Cadonau’s ability to attract and retain players has been evident. He stresses the importance of balancing different personalities within the team, drawing on his own playing days to guide his decisions. With a top-10 finish still achievable, the club remains focused on steady progress under his leadership qualities.

SCRJ’s season has seen both rapid success and tough setbacks, but the team now stands in a solid position. Cadonau’s leadership qualities, combined with a strong coaching relationship and strategic signings, has kept them competitive. The club’s focus remains on securing their place in the top half of the table by the season’s end.
