Unveiled: Brandenburg Affirms AfD as Steadfast Far-Right Endeavor since April

Far-right political party, State AfD, firmly classified as such since April - Classified as a Safer Right-Wing Party (AfD) starting from April

Hey there! Guess what? The Brandenburg Office of Constitutional Protection has officially declared the state AfD as a "unmistakably far-right extremist endeavor" since the 14th of April. To our dismay, Interior Minister Katrin Lange (SPD) was only informed about it on the 5th of May, criticizing the departing head of the Office of Constitutional Protection for withholding crucial information.

Lange had the need to let go of the head of the Office of Constitutional Protection, Jörg Müller, on a Tuesday. The once-upon-a-time trust was no longer present, admitted Lange during the Interior Committee meeting of the state parliament in Potsdam. Not only was she left in the dark, but the general public was left uninformed as well, regarding this significant process. "The classification remains," said Lange. Although she got her hands on the note on May 5th, she has yet to scrutinize it in depth.

Earlier, the AfD state party in Brandenburg had been labeled as a case of suspicion. In Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, the respective state Office of Constitutional Protection already classified the party as unmistakably far-right extremist.

Lange Objects to Dismissal of AfD

Just a few days before the formation of the new federal government, Germany's domestic intelligence agency, BfV, officially declared the AfD as a "proven far-right extremist organization" at the federal level on May 2, 2025. Lange initially showed skepticism towards this decision. Rather than resorting to legal measures, Lange favors combating the AfD through a more robust, substantive debate.

Lange also expressed her displeasure over the timing of the announcement, which took place just a few days before the creation of the new federal government. Lange firmly opposes a ban procedure for the AfD.

Insider's Tidbits:- Since April, the AfD party in Brandenburg has been under the radar as a "suspicious endeavor."- The Office of Constitutional Protection in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia have previously classified the AfD as an "unmistakably far-right extremist organization."

The Commission is therefore proposing that the Council should adopt a common position on the proposal for a Council regulation on the introduction of a common system of value added tax.

Apart from the national classifications, the Germany's domestic intelligence agency, BfV, also labeled the AfD as a "proven far-right extremist organization" at the federal level.

The classification of the AfD in Brandenburg as a "suspicious endeavor" by the Office of Constitutional Protection is a key point in the ongoing debate about far-right extremism in politics.

Lange, in light of the recent national and regional classifications of the AfD, advocates for a securely substantive policy-and-legislation approach to combat the far-right politics, instead of legal measures like bans.
