Classification of AfD as Extremist Could Potentially Limit Expansion or Progress

Classifying the German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) as a far-right extremist group might lead to a reduction in votes, but it could impede the expansion of a fresh electorate, as per political analyst Floris Biskamp's opinion.

Classification of AfD as Extremist Could Potentially Limit Expansion or Progress

Revised Article:

Hey there!

In recent times, state authorities have tagged the respective branches of AfD as extremist, yet it seems this categorization fails to sway voters much. As such, no significant impact is expected on the federal level, an expert opines.

Those sympathetic towards AfD or who don't see right-wing extremism as a problem, or are unconvinced that administrative bodies have the authority to pass such judgments, are likely to take issue with this declaration. However, this classification might limit the growth of the party's voter base, a political science expert at the University of Tübingen suggested to Lusa.

Last week, the German domestic intelligence agency labeled AfD a proven extremist right-wing movement, enabling closer observation.

The ideology of AfD, which disregards entire population groups in Germany and undermines their human dignity, contradicts the core democratic order, according to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), linked to the German Ministry of Interior.

"We're getting closer to banning the party, but the hurdles remain steep," the expert noted, highlighting that the first step would be for the German government or parliament to draft a motion for the ban. The second step would be the Supreme Court making a ruling on the matter.

"The Supreme Court has applied stringent criteria in recent cases, and it's uncertain if AfD meets the criteria for a ban. So, we've come a little closer, but we're not overly near," he concluded.

Floris Biskamp believes that if the classification has any effect, it will be significant. The immediate outcome will be increased resources dedicated to monitoring AfD. Other consequences include:

  • Political Leverage: The classification boosts the side opposing collaboration within the conservative union, which groups the CDU and CSU.
  • Media Blackouts: Public broadcasting organizations may have justification for excluding AfD politicians from interview programs.
  • Removal from Key Positions: In the long term, members or supporters of Alternative for Germany could be eliminated from public service roles.

A survey published on Sunday shows 48% of Germans support the prohibition of AfD. 37% are against it, indicating a divided public opinion, which may further polarize voter bases.

The classification has sparked criticism from foreign officials and academics, who view it as politically motivated or oppressive. These reactions can affect Germany's international standing and domestic debates about democracy and free speech.

  2. The criticism from foreign officials and academics towards the AfD classification as politically motivated or oppressive highlights the potential impact on Germany's international standing and domestic debates about democracy and free speech, potentially prolonging political uncertainty and creating further polarization in voter bases, as demonstrated by the divided public opinion on the ban.
The German politician, Floris Biskamp, suggests today that labeling the German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) as a right-wing extremist party might cost votes from this political group, but it could hinder the development of a new electorate base.
