Don't They Say Love Makes the World Go Round? Not For Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, It Seemed
Classic Hindi Film Star Dilip Kumar divided ways with Madhubala after discovering her infertility, deciding to pursue a relationship with another woman, Mumtaz.
The love story between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala is an eternal Bollywood legend. They were the original power couple, stealing the spotlight in the 50s with their passionate romance. But it all came crashing down towards the end of the decade, leaving a bitter taste behind. For years, it was thought their breakup was because of that court case around the film, Naya Daur. But Mumtaz, an old-time actor herself, has spilled some beans about the true reason behind their split. (Fun Fact: Did you know about the time when a dying Madhubala and Dilip Kumar met one last time after his wedding with Saira? Check it out!)
The Unsaid Truth Behind their Split
In an interview with Vickey Lalwani, Mumtaz dished some juicy secrets. She confessed that it was Dilip Kumar who ended things with Madhubala because she couldn't bear children. Yup, you heard it right! The woman who won millions of hearts couldn't give him what he wanted—a kid. Madhubala herself told Mumtaz about the situation[1][2][3].
Dilip Kumar eventually married actor Saira Banu in 1966. Sadly, they never had a child. "He might have thought, 'Let me try with someone else.' It's tragic that not only did he not have a child with Madhubala, but also with Saira," Mumtaz lamented[1][3].
The Love Story They Never Shared
Madhubala and Dilip Kumar began their love affair in 1951 and even got engaged in the mid-50s. But things got rocky between them due to cold relations with Madhubala's father, Ataullah Khan[4]. In 1957, after Madhubala backed out of Naya Daur, BR Chopra dragged her to court. Dilip Kumar testified in favor of the producer, which, according to gossip, sealed their fate[4]. They were last seen together in the iconic Mughal-e-Azam, which was released in 1960[4].
Madhubala passed away in 1968 at the young age of 36 after battling congenital heart disease. She was married to Kishore Kumar. Dilip Kumar, on the other hand, died in 2021 at the ripe age of 98 and is survived by his wife, Saira Banu.
