Clashing narratives emerge from the battlefront between Ukrainians and Russians
In the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russian forces continue to make ground, according to Russia's Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov. He reported ground gains around the city of Pokrovsk, as per Russian agencies.
Ukrainian troops in Pokrovsk face significant challenges, as Russian forces broke through defenses south of the city in early 2025, crossing the Kasennyj Torez river near Razine and advancing westward. The Russian forces, numbering around 110,000–112,000, with heavy armor and artillery, conduct intense attacks that severely disrupt Ukrainian supply lines via Rodynske. This has complicated logistics for defenders in Pokrovsk.
Ukrainian military sources reported that larger Russian units have been encircled near the city of Pokrovsk. However, no new information about the status of these encircled units was provided. The Ukrainian military sources also expect the surrender of these encircled units shortly, but this remains to be seen.
Elsewhere, Russian forces attempted to bypass Ukrainian defense lines in Kupjansk by crawling through a gas pipeline. A gas pipeline used by Russian soldiers to enter Kupjansk was subsequently destroyed.
Intense fighting is occurring along almost all front sections between Russian and Ukrainian forces. The General Staff in Kyiv reported a total of 117 engagements along the entire front line, but with unchanged positions. An independent assessment of the situation was not possible due to conflicting reports from both sides.
Gerasimov stated that Russian forces are advancing in all directions, but the Ukrainian military remains resolute in their efforts to halt the Russian advance, disregarding losses.
