Amotekun vs Police: Clash over Stolen Motorcycle Suspect in Ondo State

Clash Ensues Between Amotekun and Police Over Disputed Suspect Detention (Gunfire reported)

Tensions are running high in Ondo State's capital, Akure, following a gunfire showdown between personnel from the Amotekun security outfit and the police. The incident occurred when both agencies wrestled over custody of a suspect linked to a stolen motorcycle case.

It all started when a complainant approached the Amotekun office to report a missing motorcycle. Swiftly, Amotekun operatives took action and recovered the stolen vehicle, leading to the arrest of the suspect. However, a team of police officers arrival at the Amotekun office, demanding custody of the suspect, complicated matters.

One police officer told reporters that the Amotekun personnel declined the request, directing them to the Amotekun's state commander, Chief Adetunji Adeleye. The conversation soon escalated into a heated argument, culminating in an exchange of gunshots between the two agencies, injuring several officers and causing panic among residents.

In a statement, Ayanlade Olayinka, the Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, revealed that the police had received a report about a suspect involved in stealing property from a church. They dispatched officers to the scene to recover the suspect and related exhibits.

According to Olayinka, the police officers were the first to arrive at the scene. However, upon their arrival, a group of Amotekun personnel and commercial motorcyclists arrived, forcefully taking custody of the suspect and exhibits, injuring a police officer in the process. The state's commissioner of police, Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, immediately ordered tactical commanders to recover both the suspect and the exhibits.

Through dialogue and intervention by the commanders of both agencies, the suspect and exhibits were returned to the police. Undeterred, a few disgruntled Amotekun personnel fired sporadically into the air, prompting the police to respond with tear gas to prevent a breakdown in law and order.

As the dust settles, questions about the future of inter-agency cooperation in Ondo State linger. The Amotekun security outfit has been active in addressing crime, with significant arrests and interventions in various criminal activities, but recent events highlight challenges in inter-agency communication and coordination.
