The DFB-Pokal match between 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and FC Schalke 04, held on August 17, 2025, was marked by heightened security measures due to several incidents, including racist abuse.

As the game progressed, Schalke midfielder Christopher Antwi-Adjei complained of racist slurs directed at him by Lokomotive Leipzig supporters, who responded by whistling. This escalated tensions and prompted investigations by the DFB (German Football Association) to address the serious allegations and uphold standards against discrimination in football.

In response to these concerns, approximately 400 police officers were deployed to secure the match. The Leipzig Police Directorate focused on fan separation, ensuring a disturbance-free event, and law enforcement. The Federal Police Inspectorate in Leipzig escorted the visiting fans by train and prevented them from directly entering the stadium.

Unfortunately, several incidents occurred during the match. Before the game, individuals in the visitor section climbed over security barriers and pushed a goal. An investigation into criminal mischief is underway due to the damage caused to the goal. During the game, there were two altercations among home fans, which will be investigated for bodily harm.

Hostile fan factions also contributed to the game being categorized as having the highest level of security. Several blue smoke bombs were ignited in the home fan section at the start of the second half, and around 20:15, six vehicles in Dösner Straße were vandalized with graffiti related to the visiting team. An investigation into criminal mischief is underway for both incidents.

For the departure of approximately 14,000 spectators, temporary closures were necessary, causing traffic disruptions. Despite these challenges, the game continued, with the police ensuring the safety of all attendees.

The DFB has taken these incidents seriously and is working to address the issues that arose during the match. Further information on official outcomes of investigations or penalties might be available through follow-up DFB statements or club announcements. The football community continues to strive for a safe and inclusive environment for all players and fans.
