Clash among Atalanta and Inter supporters results in fatal stabbing of 26-year-old man in Bergamo.
LATE-NIGHT TRAGEDY IN BERGAMO:
In a chilling turn of events, a heated soccer fandom dispute led to a fatal stabbing in Bergamo last night. The unsettling incident unfolded in the vicinity of the stadium, on Via dei Ghirardelli, following an altercation in a local bar.
The unfortunate victim was identified as Riccardo Claris, a 26-year-old born and raised in the Valbrembana region. Riccardo and his friends were enjoying the evening in one of the bars in Borgo Santa Caterina, accompanied by fellow Atalanta supporters, when a group of two twin brothers and their associates, die-hard Inter Milan fans, walked in and began singing a provocative tune. The tension escalated quickly, with both sides trading insults and ominous words. Eventually, the Inter fans left the bar, but they were not done for the night.
Returning home, the Inter fans were followed by around ten Atalanta fans, including Claris. Enter Jacopo De Simone, an 18-year-old Inter Milan enthusiast, who armed himself with a household ceramic knife. Jacopo needed only one strike todeliver a fatal blow to Claris, targeting the left shoulder blade. Witnesses reported that the knife's handle broke off immediately afterward.
Jacopo De Simone was swiftly apprehended by Carabinieri officers at the scene, where he was arrested in flagrante delicto for murder. The De Simone family has previously made headlines in relation to an older brother, Carmine De Simone, who was arrested on March 9 in connection to the murder of Luciano Muttoni in Valbrembo.
This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that can arise from the passion and rivalry that often fuel soccer fandom. It is a distressing instance where that contagious spirit turned destructive and deadly.
The average soccer fan might find the general-news surrounding the crime-and-justice incident in Bergamo disheartening, as it involved a senseless act of violence over sports allegiances. Interestingly, the perpetrator, Jacopo De Simone, has family history with another suspect, Carmine De Simone, involved in a previous crime-and-justice case – sports-betting related.
