Civilians Affected by Artillery Strikes in Russia-Controlled Donetsk Region
In eastern Ukraine, the city of Donetsk continues to be a fiercely contested battlefield in the ongoing war between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists. The city, which was under the control of separatists from 2014 to 2022, has experienced violence and casualties as a result of the conflict.
Recent shelling in Donetsk has led to tragic consequences, with a woman losing her life and three others sustaining injuries. The attack, reported by occupation authorities, was allegedly carried out by the Ukrainian military.
The Ukrainian military is one of the key players in the war in Ukraine, which has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for almost three and a half years. The front line in the war is approximately 40 kilometers away from Donetsk.
Despite Russia's attempts to annex the partially occupied region of Donetsk, as seen in September 2022, the current status of the conflict remains highly contested. Russian troops have made some penetrations near key logistics hubs, but Ukrainian forces are actively counterattacking and reclaiming settlements in eastern Donetsk Oblast.
Ukrainian forces have reportedly cleared multiple settlements east and northeast of Dobropillia and have pushed Russian units out of critical front-line positions. However, Russia continues its offensive, albeit with some stalling in certain directions.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has rejected Russian proposals to cede parts of Donetsk, emphasizing that Ukraine will not withdraw from the Donbas region. Such concessions, he believes, could enable new Russian offensives.
The international community, including the UN and EU, continues to condemn any forced changes in Ukraine’s borders and warns Russia about potential accountability for war crimes.
As of August 2025, the situation remains fluid, with small territorial shifts but no decisive resolution. The conflict reflects a dynamic, active conflict without a clear resolution following recent shelling and contested annexation claims by Russia.
