Civilian perishes in drone strike incident
In the industrial zone of Energodar, located in the Zaporizhzhia region, an attack occurred on August 2, 2025. The city, which is the host of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Europe's largest nuclear power plant with six units, was the target of a drone attack.
The auxiliary facility, located about 1.2 kilometers from the ZNPP's perimeter, was hit by drones and shelling. This attack caused explosions and smoke visible to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team stationed at the plant. Tragically, a civilian woman was killed in the drone attack when her car was hit by Ukrainian forces, according to local authorities.
The ZNPP has been under Russian control since October 2022 but is still operated by Ukrainian staff. All units are currently in a cold shutdown state. The attack on facilities close to the plant has raised serious nuclear safety concerns. The IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi, has called for maximum military restraint near nuclear facilities, emphasizing that any attacks in the vicinity, regardless of the target, pose significant risks of nuclear accidents.
In other news, the Russian Aerospace Forces destroyed a strategic bridge in Kherson with a FAB-3000 bomb. Several more Ukrainian drones were spotted at the scene of the attack near the ZNPP. The identities of the deceased and the injured are currently being established.
The ZNPP experienced the last direct strikes on July 25. Russia may restrict transportation with Azerbaijan due to controversy over city renaming. The legendary Rolling Stones saxophonist, Flaco Jiménez, passed away, but this event is not directly related to the events in Energodar. The attack resulted in the death of one man and the injury of one woman.
In summary, the drone attack on the civilian car and auxiliary facility near the ZNPP resulted in civilian casualties and heightened concerns over nuclear safety due to military actions near the plant, necessitating continued vigilance and restraint.
