Civil servant Nupur Borah, currently imprisoned, faces a suspension from her position in Assam's government.
In a significant development, the former Assam Civil Service officer, Nupur Borah, was arrested on Friday following the seizure of substantial cash, gold, diamond ornaments, and documents worth millions from her residences and bank lockers.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted comprehensive searches at Nupur Borah's residences in Guwahati and Barpeta, which led to the recovery of Rs 92.5 lakh in cash, gold, and diamond ornaments worth nearly Rs 1.5 crore. Additionally, at least Rs 23 lakh was seized from two bank lockers in the Barpeta district. This recovery is described as the largest cash seizure ever made by the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell.
The investigating officers are probing Nupur Borah to unearth the money trail involved in the illegal transfer of land while she was posted in the Barpeta district. The controversy surrounding Nupur Borah began around six months ago, after allegations of her authorising an illegal land transfer while serving in the district.
Following the controversy, she was transferred to Goroimari in Kamrup, where surveillance against her continued. Nupur Borah was taken to the Goroimari circle office in the Kamrup district on Friday.
Nupur Borah has been in police custody for adopting various illegal means while being posted in Barpeta district. Investigators traced ownership of three flats in Guwahati linked to Nupur Borah, apart from other properties under scrutiny. Several individuals suspected of facilitating the deals are currently being questioned.
The Chief Minister, in a statement, expressed his concern over the scale of corruption in the case of Nupur Borah, stating that her wealth was nearly 400 times higher than her official earnings. He urged people to remain alert against corruption and report instances of bribery. The Chief Minister reiterated his government's commitment to fighting corruption, stressing that investigations against Nupur Borah and her associates would be pursued with complete transparency to uphold accountability within the administration.
Stringent legal action will be pursued against Nupur Borah for allegedly amassing assets vastly disproportionate to her known sources of income. Nupur Borah was suspended from service on Friday, and many documents were seized from her office by the sleuths of the Chief Minister's vigilance cell.
The Chief Minister stated that the seizure was a testament to his government's relentless efforts to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law. The arrest and seizure come as a significant step towards ensuring transparency and accountability within the administration.
