"City's response to criticism over Wiesn-Fass advertising for the Olympics since 1989"

In a significant move, the city council of Munich has decided to apply for the hosting of the Olympic Games, but has announced that it will seek the approval of the city's residents in a forthcoming citizens' decision. The date for this vote has been set for October 23.

However, the announcement has not been met with unanimous support. The Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP) faction in the city has expressed surprise and disapproval at the sight of Olympic advertising at the traditional Wiesn press tour. This advertising stand, a traditional fixture at the Oktoberfest, features the 'Olympia-Looping', the largest transportable roller coaster in the world, which represents the Olympic rings.

The ÖDP faction considers the installation of the Olympic advertising stand as an impermissible political promotional action that violates the operating regulations of the Oktoberfest. They have demanded that the stand be dismantled before the tapping on September 20.

The Wiesn chief for 2023, Dr. Christian Scharpf (SPD), who is a supporter of the Olympic Games, has stated that the Munich Oktoberfest is not a campaign arena in 2023. The Munich Oktoberfest operating regulations, in fact, prohibit election campaign appearances, unlike in beer tents at other folk festivals.

Despite the ÖDP's opposition, the economic department maintains that the pro-Olympic stand is allowed under the Wiesn regulations. The stand was permitted to communicate the city council's decision to apply for the Olympic Games using a photo point.

The group opposing the Olympic advertising at Oktoberfest includes representatives from the ÖDP, The Left, and environmental associations. They have criticized the Olympic promotion at the festival and demanded the immediate removal of the stand before the official tapping on September 20th.

Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) and Wiesn chief Dr. Christian Scharpf are supporters of the Olympic Games. They are promoting a 'yes' vote for the citizens' decision on October 23. If the citizens say 'yes', the city will continue with the application process.

The last Wiesn chief, Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU), also stated that the Munich Oktoberfest is not a campaign arena in 2023. The controversy over the Olympic advertising at the Oktoberfest continues, adding an unexpected twist to the city's bid for the Olympic Games.
