City water cleaning operations carried out by divers in urban waterways

Nizhny Novgorod, Russia — A recent cleaning operation aimed at ensuring the safety and enjoyment of its lakes has been initiated by local authorities. The video about the lake cleaning was published by GTRK "Nizhny Novgorod" on May 22, 2025.

One of the key figures involved in this operation is Ilya Burmakov, a diver who is part of the emergency rescue squad of the management of the MCKU "GOChS". According to Burmakov, the amount of trash found during the clean-up has decreased each year, indicating a positive trend in reducing littering.

Residents of Nizhny Novgorod, such as Anastasia Chugunova, are deeply connected to the city's lakes. Chugunova frequently visits a specific lake location, which she describes as beautiful, with white sand and always clean. Her child also enjoys swimming in the lake, and she expresses her love for the lake in Nizhny Novgorod.

The cleaning operation in the Avtozavodsky district resulted in the retrieval of an unusual find — a Bluetooth speaker and a cable spool from a lake. This discovery underscores the importance of these clean-up efforts.

The bottom of all lakes in Nizhny Novgorod is currently being checked, with the process expected to be completed by May 23. Divers have initiated a cleaning operation at the bottom of 14 urban bodies of water in an unspecified location.

The success of these initiatives in improving water safety and public enjoyment cannot be definitively determined at this time, as there is limited data available. However, the decrease in trash and the positive feedback from residents like Chugunova suggest a positive impact.

A repeat cleaning operation is scheduled for June in all the lakes in Nizhny Novgorod, further underscoring the commitment of local authorities to maintaining the city's waterways. As the city continues to prioritise lake cleanliness, residents like Chugunova can look forward to enjoying their beloved lakes for years to come.
